There are so many advantages to farming – setting your own work hours, having a variety of daily tasks that use every skill you’ve ever gained, being able to work alongside your spouse and children, and purposely improving the condition of the soil and often your family’s health.
However, as with any occupation, there are also the not-so-desirable elements …. long days, the often relentless list of urgent jobs, finding it difficult to switch off due to living and working in the same space and much more.
The last month or so have taken a heavy toll on us and our ‘sideline’ meat business. We’ve experienced some disappointments and unfortunate mistakes, coupled with exhausting hours over the harvest season and of course the lead up to the end of the year.
While our philosophy is to always look after customers to the very best of our ability, we’ve recently seen the need to extend ourselves a little grace and take a break.

How does Border Park Organics having time-off impact me as a subscriber/ customer?
We have made the difficult decision to cancel our last order for the year (delivery was actually supposed to be this week).
It is uncharacteristic of us to withdraw from an order (it’s only the second time in over 3 years), but we needed to focus our energy on harvesting our crops (especially given the rain that interrupted reaping) and spending time with extended family who have been staying with us for the past 6 weeks.
What does the future look like for Border Park Organics?
Even though we’re currently taking some time off, we have some really exciting things planned for 2018!
Many of you will remember that earlier this year we sent out a survey asking whether you saw the value in being able to ‘pre-order’ your meat packs. We’re so grateful to those who took the time to respond.
The overwhelming response to this survey was ‘Yes’ you wanted the ability to ‘pre-order’, particularly as so many of you had been disappointed when you missed out on being able to order your meat pack of choice.
Following on from this survey, we’ve spent many months planning the best way to accommodate the needs of our growing customer base.
At last we feel confident we’ve found a solution that will work for everyone.
Therefore, in 2018 we will be offering our meat in 2 different ways:
- To ‘members’ (either on a 2-monthly or 4-monthly plan)
- To the general public on a monthly basis (as we do now)
Why the changes and new direction?
There are a number of reasons why we’ve decided to change the way we sell our organic meat online.
Firstly, we recognise that missing out on ordering your pack of choice is very frustrating, and that time-poor families don’t have enough headspace to place their orders using our simple online ordering system. (That’s why we’re so excited for you, our valued customers, to have this ‘membership’ option 🙂 )
Secondly, we see the value in strengthening the relationship we have with customers – allowing you the opportunity to ‘invest’ in farming and experience the highs and lows of primary production. (We’ll explain this more when we open membership spots in April).
Thirdly, the admin time to keep things running smoothly is a full-time job (keeping in mind that we also run a broadacre farm and home-educate our children). We need to reduce our admin workload so we’re also available for our children 🙂
When will the new membership options commence?
We anticipate we’ll contact all subscribers in April 2018 (with preference given to those who respond to our questionnaire) when we’ll be opening up a limited number of membership spots.
Once we’ve closed our 2018 membership programme, we’ll begin sending out meat orders monthly from May 2018. Keep an eye on our Facebook and Instagram pages for more details over the new few months.
Do I have to become a Member to order from you?
No – but the vast majority of our meat packs will be offered to Members.
If you choose not to become a member, you will still have the opportunity to order on a monthly basis (from May – December), but there will only be a limited number of meat packs available.
Why wait til mid 2018 to open Membership?
As well as needing a break so we can focus on family life, we also need some time to set this system up and iron out all the possible complications.
We’ve also got some exciting membership perks that are in the pipeline, so thanks for your patience while we put the finishing touches to these plans 🙂
